Surprising Health Benefits You Should Know About Tea

Did you know drinking tea is one of the most popular among all beverages? That's because it has numerous health benefits.

You may be surprised to know this. Tea is the second most valuable beverage in the world after water. It is the most widely used drink in the world with an amazing range of health benefits.

Tea is a crop that originated in Asia. It is cultivated and processed in different ways, but all tea comes from the same plant. The health benefits of tea are numerous and over four thousand years ago, people were drinking this for its health benefits. Tea contains antioxidants, which can be beneficial to your body.

The Collins Dictionary describe tea as a drink made by adding hot water to tea leaves or tea bags. Many people add milk to the drink and some add sugar.

The leaves, leaf buds, and internodes of the tea plant prepared for use in beverages usually by immediate curing by heat or by such curing following a period of fermentation.

SUPRISING HEALTH BENEFITS OF TEA

1. Your risk of certain cancers goes down
The antioxidants and compounds found in tea have been linked to a lower risk of certain cancers. “Beneficial effects have been found in skin, prostate, lung, and breast cancers,” says Uma Naidoo, MD, Director of Nutritional and Lifestyle Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital and Faculty at Harvard Medical School. “Different types of tea impact different cancers.”
Drinking tea is just one of the simple ways you can prevent cancer.

2. Green Tea Beverage benefits:
Green tea is a good source of catechins, the majority of which are epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which has been found in studies to reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol. EGCG may also counter inflammation in the body. If you like lemon, squeezing a slice into green tea may help its beneficial compounds survive digestion, according to research from Purdue University.
Green tea’s combo of caffeine and plentiful catechins can boost mental alertness and even raise your metabolic rate so that you burn more calories, though the effect may be too small to help you lose weight.
3. Best for Lung Health: Herbal Tea
If you’re worried about your lungs, here’s how to breathe easier: Drink herbal tea.
Anti-inflammatory powers in herbal teas can help loosen airways tightened by conditions such as asthma, says Czerwony. She recommends herbal teas featuring turmeric, cinnamon or ginger as a way to keep the air flowing.
As an added benefit, drinking a hot cup of herbal tea can also help clear congestion by loosening mucus. “It’ll clean out the gunk,” says Czerwony.
4. Green Tea May Help Reduce Rheumatoid Arthritis Symptoms
If you’re looking to decrease inflammation, add green tea to your shopping list.
In a study published in The Journal of Nutrition, rats given green tea extract in drinking water that were then induced with the autoimmune disease rheumatoid arthritis (RA) developed less severe symptoms than rats with RA that drank plain water. More studies are needed in humans, but the researchers note that green tea extract may be helpful when used along with conventional RA treatment.

5. Tea Can Help Manage Diabetes
Tea may also reduce your risk of diabetes by helping keep blood glucose and body weight in check. A 2016 review of human and animal studies found that people who drank four or more cups of tea daily had, on average, a 30% lower chance of developing type 2 diabetes. Specific teas may boost your benefits as well. For example, a study in Nutrition found that chamomile tea improved glycemic control (read: blood sugar fluctuations) in people with type 2 diabetes due to its high antioxidant content. Improving glycemic control helps manage diabetes and reduces the risk for people to develop diabetes in general.
People who drank 20 ounces of plain black tea daily for 12 weeks improved markers of heart health and decreased their fasting blood glucose, lowering their risk of type 2 diabetes, according to a study published in Preventive Medicine.

6. Tea Could Improve Sleep
Losing sleep? Passionflower tea may help. A study published in Phytotherapy Research found that people who drank a cup of passionflower tea about an hour before bed reported a better night's sleep than those who drank a placebo beverage.

The health benefits of tea are legendary. One cup a day can help maintain a healthy weight, prevent heart disease, fight cavities and tooth decay, protect against cancer, keep the immune system strong and lower the risk of strokes and heart attacks.
